Songadeewin has mature, responsible staff, carefully and systematically trained in matters of safety and first aid. We are especially vigilant in guarding against accidents on the waterfront and on trips.
In addition, each camper must pass safety tests in swimming and canoeing before she is allowed to engage in water activities.
Songadeewin has a consulting physician, resident nurses, and fully equipped health center. Ex-cellent hospital facilities are available in Middlebury, fifteen minutes away. We have hot show-ers, modern plumbing, and state-tested well water.
Songadeewin does not require a camp uniform. We ask that campers bring rugged casual clothes that are appropriate for outdoor activities. It is important that girls do not bring clothes that pre-vent them from participating fully in our program, or that inhibit them from taking part in "woodsy" camp activities.
Bathing suits should be comfortable for active water sports; they should provide enough coverage to facilitate easy arm and leg movement.
We ask that girls leave make-up, nail polish, hairdryers, dresses, skirts, and designer clothes at home. At Songadeewin, we want girls to be concerned with the strength of their character, not the look of their clothes.
Our camp store offers a variety of Songadeewin clothing (such as tee shirts, sweatshirts and hats) as well as basic tripping equipment (such as flashlights, river bags and water bottles). A com-plete clothing list is provided upon enrollment.
Laundry is done weekly at the camp at no extra charge.
We have a non-sectarian service, called Sunday Circle, each Sunday, out-of-doors. A different group of girls and staff work each week to prepare the service, which focuses on values they feel are important. Topics range from the merits of friendship to the appreciation of nature to the sharing of a special tripping experience.
Songadeewin is located on Lake Dunmore in the heart of the Green Mountains of Vermont, 10 miles south of Middlebury. It is 200 miles from Boston, 275 miles from New York City, and 150 miles from Hartford, Connecticut.
An international airport in Burlington, Vermont, one hour away, offers air access from almost anywhere. There is Amtrak service to Rutland, Vermont, 45 minutes away.
Parents are invited to visit at any time after the first two weeks of a girl's stay. We ask that you call ahead to be sure your child is not out on a trip.
We try to be as flexible as possible with parents' schedules. We'd be glad to send you a listing of local hotels and motels.
Scholarship support is provided by several sources, including the Keewaydin Endowment Fund and the General Breed Scholarship Fund. This financial aid is available to a limited number of campers and families who would not otherwise be able to afford Songadeewin's tuition. Full information is available upon request.
